WoodlandCPS Bushcraft School – Bushcraft Introduction – 1 Day

Bushcraft Fundamentals Course:

Our Introductory Bushcraft & Survival Course:

Our WoodlandCPS Bushcraft Fundamentals course is aimed at those who want to learn how to live more comfortably in the wilds, or just remind and improve any previous basic knowledge learnt.

This course introduces you to the basic skills required to thrive in the wilds, and is based on the four main principles of survival, fire, food, shelter and water. Throughout the day you will learn how to build an emergency shelter, collect and purify your water, prepare your own food, and how to light a fire.

This one-day course takes place on the beautiful Secret Meadows estate in Suffolk, an award-winning campsite with conservation at its heart.

The course has to adapt to the ever-changing seasons, but below is a typical example of our Bushcraft Fundamentals Course.

From the meeting point following introductions we take a walk across two wild meadows in to the woodland. During this walk your instructors will be more than happy to point out both the present flora and fauna that has a direct part to play in the skills of Bushcraft,

Upon arrival at camp we will make ourselves comfortable underneath the parachute shelter and following the mandatory safety brief and a quick tour of the school, you will be informed of the latest UK Knife Law and then without delay introduced to the Mora Pro Carbon C Bushcraft Knife and its basic use, you will be taught how to hold, pass and complete a number of basic cuts all safely under the instruction of a qualified instructor.  Following a break for tea, coffee or juice we will go for a walk in the woodland, where dependent on the time of year you will be to introduced to some of the trees and plants that we use in Bushcraft for food, fuel and fire,

Fire is one of the most enjoyable skills to master for anyone wishing to develop their Bushcraft skills and therefore after our walk in the woods your instructor will demonstrate the following: the selection of appropriate kindling and tinder, and then show you different methods of getting your fire lit, and maintaining it. You also have the opportunity to try out the different methods, with our instructor providing extra tuition and guidance as required.

Once your happy you will be sent into the woods to gather your own materials, for the opportunity to build and light your own fire using natural tinder’s, fuel and the Light My Fire Swedish FireSteel.

We will break for lunch. Free tea, coffee, biscuits, juice and water will be available throughout the day.

You’ll find out quickly when working in the outdoors a simple task takes much longer than in our modern comfortable lives, so we then get straight into looking at Bushcraft shelter construction specifically where, how and what with.

Following your introduction you will build a one-person shelter either from a man made tarp material or from natural materials a debris shelter depending on the time of year.

We finish the afternoon off looking at the last main principles: water, we will look talk and look at the knowledge required on where to look and find water, how to safely collect it, and most important how to filter and purify your water making it safe to drink.

At the end of the day we walk out of the woods back to the cars, and on route the instructors continue to share their knowledge with you about the sustainable use of the resources that are available to you in this environment.

It is not our mission to turn you into a Bushcraft legend in a single day, but rather impart knowledge that is easy to remember, easy to practice and most importantly fun whilst doing. “Would you rather survive or thrive in the wilds?”

Our WoodlandCPS Bushcraft Fundamentals for Teenagers

Develop new skills, Enhance previous knowledge learnt and Excel in something new. A great opportunity for young adults aged 12-17 to experience Bushcraft and Survival within a stunning nature reserve in Suffolk.

Aimed at 12-17 year-olds, the Teenagers Fundamental Bushcraft Course is designed to increase self-awareness and ability to thrive in a woodland setting whilst gaining a better responsibility and understanding for the environment, and its Fauna and Flora.

Parents are welcome to join their son’s or daughter’s on this course if they wish although we actively encourage teenagers to attend without parental supervision to provide a more immersive experience and remember our `Families WOW weekend course is a great experience where all generations are welcome above the age of 8 years old”.

Here you will spend two days and one night in our woodlands covering the Fundamental skills of Bushcraft, including knife craft, game preparation, shelter building, sleeping in your shelter, fire craft, game prep and camp craft.

This two-day course takes place on the beautiful Sinfield Conservation Trust estate in Suffolk, an award-winning charity with conservation at its heart.

The course has to adapt to the ever-changing seasons, but below is a typical example of our Bushcraft Fundamentals Course.

The young adults will learn the pure pleasure and enjoyment of fire craft, using both man made and natural tinder’s whilst using many different methods of ignition. They will learn with independence comes the need for maturity and this will be evident during the knife craft, you will learn how to safely hold, pass and use a bushcraft knife for every day uses in the wilds. They will also build their own shelter either entirely from natural materials or man made tarps, which forms the basis for their overnight accommodation.

Wild food will be provided both in the feather and in the skin and course participants will be encouraged to prepare and cook meals themselves over the campfire, whilst the importance of gaining protein in the wilds will be made clear no one is forced to take part in the game preparation.

If your teenagers are preparing for the Duke of Edinburgh Awards (DOE) this weekend will give them the opportunity to learn many skills required for all levels of the DOE.

An expert who teaches bushcraft full time and is part of the Suffolk Education System teaching KS3 students in schools routinely, runs this course and will be looking after the young adults.

Your instructor will be drawing on a full 22 year career in the British Military with experiences of bushcraft and survival from all a over the world.

This experience will test the teenagers, whilst offering them great rewards, both mentally and physically.

The realisation of finding out many new skills in a environment that could not be further from their modern bedrooms cannot be misunderstood. It is in our experience that following this weekend the respect for both nature and humans alike is raised to new high level for participants.
